repeal the tax?

In today’s Charlotte business journal there is an article about “Marketing campaigns in works for light-rail fight.”

The article goes into detail about how the Charlotte chamber has lined up a P-R firm to handle the pro transit-tax campaign and the battle over funding for the light-rail system here in Charlotte.

Furthermore there is talk about there needs to be an aggressive fund-raising campaign to fund this pro-transit ad and marketing campaign.  Pat Mumford says, “It’s going to take a substantial amount of money.  It will be well into six-figures…”

Political analysts seem to think it is going to take more than the $700,000 it took in 2001 to back the arena referendum (which if you remember was voted down but the council found a way to make it work).

So more than $700,000 probably means $1 - 1.5 million JUST for an ad-campaign to keep the transit tax.  Does anyone see how this makes any sense?  Why not raise funds to put into light rail and reduce the tax?

I’ve had a weird taste in my mouth about this ever since I read in the paper that a bus was used to take city council members on a tour of the city. Ummm…city council members needing a tour of the city?  :::hitting my head on the wall:::: as I think about this.
