wipe out on the diamond

I’m feeling the aches and pains this evening of a day out on the baseball field.

It was a crazy score, we were down 10 or so runs, we had men on first and second with 2 outs with me at the plate.  The first ball pitched was a strike, but I took it.  The second pitch was one I thought I could put into the outfield, but weakly grounded to the second baseman.  I threw my bat down and ran as quickly as I could to first.  Now when I was running to first I was really digging hard to beat out the throw.  My head was down and I was firmly concentrating on my stride more than anything else.  When I was a few feet from first I put it in my mind that I was going to run through the play, because I knew the play would be close.  It all happened rather quickly.  My foot touched the bag and just about the same time I saw the opponents first baseman’s body (Albert) right in front of me catching the ball for the out.  I slowed my velocity about 0.00001 % and let’s just say there was impact.  I feel off to the side after running through the collision.  I jarred my lower back, scrapped my knees, and elbows in which I fell upon.  I made a weak little roll on the foul line.  I looked up to see Albert above me asking time and time again if I was o.k.  I noticed he had a cut on the bridge of his nose.  I stood up quickly because I was on adrenaline, and concerned about him.  Albert had a bloody nose and cut up knee.  I was really concerned about his nose it wasn’t long it was bleeding pretty badly and a little swollen.  I ran to the cars (again, on adrenaline) and found some napkins.  Running back I gave those to him before starting to feel the effects of the collision.  I think we bumped heads - my front top of the head into the bridge of his nose.  While playing on, Albert sat on the bench nursing his knee and keeping his head tilted and clogged up with napkins.

Albert continued to play after a while.  He made the comment that on one play the ball grazed his shoulder.  He was thankful that it took his mind off his nose.  I’m sure his face will look a little rough the next few days, but could have been alot worse than it was, but I’m thankful that we were only rattled a little and neither of us needed to be carted off the field.
