Jaars : Monday night

It has been a super long day, but an awesome one. I am extremely full from our themed dinner, a Persian feast, and ready to crash out pretty soon, but excited to share this quick handful of treasured moments from the day:

  • Conclusive evidence followed by Michael’s acquiescence that the schwa is in fact a real linguistic concept, actually represented by an upside down e and not a random Jessica invention.
  • A rocking cool monolingual demonstration of language learning without the advantage of a bilingual translator. The mystery language was Romanian (not my first guess, “Fretalian”).
  • A tour of the center, including the aviation area, where we saw many extremely small planes that both intrigue me and scare the persnickets out of me. Plus, where would my luggage go? We’d figure that out later, I guess.

Highlights of the day. That, and there was baklava at dinner. Homemade, and tasty-licious. Plus so far almost everyone we have met here has spent time in Papua New Guinea, which in my opinion has yielded some of the most interesting stories and pictures. They must have a thousand languages there!!!

And for those of you wondering, “why the password?,” it occurred to us that we should be thoughtful about how much information about our time and plans here are publicly available, depending on how all of this excitement moves forward. And we figured that rather than less detail being more, perhaps less access to detail would be more. Or something like that. Thanks for bearing with us!
