what proof?

This week Ray Comfort will confront two atheists to a debate about whether God exists. Ray says that he will do so without a Bible and will not talk about faith. I’ve even seen it mentioned that he will prove that atheists don’t exist! This debate will be broadcast on ABC on May 9th.

Now I’ve seen flapping in the Christian blogosphere that takes issue with his approach. Some say they think it is impossible to prove God without at least talking about faith. The debate has not even happened and yet some folks are already considering this debate foolish and perhaps even embarrassing.

My thoughts is to wait until after the debate then look at what was presented. Remember that the debate is going to be broadcast on a national TV outlet that is so much into the things of this world and its moral filth based on it’s news coverage, personalities that represent it, and programs. Comfort is taking this challenge head-on. When faith is brought up amongst atheists they admit that they have faith in what they (don’t) believe in as well.

Remember the words of Paul in 1 Corinthians 9:19-23

19For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them. 20To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law. 21To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law. 22To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. 23I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings.

How do you proclaim the gospel to those who flat out don’t believe? You get around their cleverly set snares, and then shower them with the truth and the promises of our Lord and Savior. You do it in such a way to demonstrate the love of Christ.

Brothers, don’t be pessimists! Don’t be in doubt! Fear not! (Haggai 2:5)

We need to be in prayer for Comfort. Pray for the Spirit to guide him. Pray that God will be glorified through the words of Ray during this debate. Pray that those words will Scripturally saturated and flow from his mouth in thirst quenching water.
