Gammons on what the Red Sox are paying Matsuzaka:
Obviously, the combined $103.1M over six years is a $17.2M AAV…but because of the system, it is, in reality, far less than that because the posting process gave the Red Sox an exclusive right to negotiate. (Source)
Huh?
According to Peter Gammons, the Red Sox are paying $103 million total for Matsuzaka. However, because they were the only team to talk to Matsuzaka, Gammons claims the $103 million is actually not $103 million. Does that make any sense?
The lesson: $103 million is less than $103 million.
