Rea Sea and Amelie
Last night both @jesablack and I took in the sights, smells and oh so delicious food at Red Sea in Elizabeth. Small environment. Great staff.
Afterwards we had dessert at Amelie’s down in NoDa. Nothing more to be said.

slice & dice
Yet…it happened again.
Another knife incidient in the Black household.
So I was doing some bread baking, and right now I am experimenting with pre-ferment dough, and cutting off some dough to store in the fridge I had to go dig in our knife drawer for the sharpie pen (get it? we keep the sharpie pen in our knife drawer…). Well the day before I left a knife in the drawer unproperly...

extreme pain...sometimes
In a mad dash to get breakfast before church on Sunday I decided to finish off one of our loaves of bread we fixed for Christmas. I grabbed one of our cutco knives, the bread cutting kind, and went to work. I even stopped half-way through to wax poetic with Jess about our pipe dream of opening a bakery one day. Ahhh…somehow I don’t think the bakers did what soon followed. Nearing...

Fire ants in December??
Arriving home from a busy morning…well, playing 18 holes of par 3 golf…I noticed the rope, that was providing some modest support for our tree, was digging into our front yard tree. Just knowing that it can prevent further growth and hurt our tree, I went inside and retrieved the pocket knife.
William followed me out in his socks and started to walk across our front yard. I told him...

chicken on a cold day
Today for lunch I am planning on making chicken-in-a-pot and will be posting images and directions on our flickr page. Should happen in about half-an-hour. Enjoy!
Menu plan:
Chicken in a pot, brussel sprouts, and potatoes
Update: The chicken, well, wasn’t sooo fresh. I chunked it in the trash and made chick pea soup instead. We’re saving the brussels for Thanksgiving though.

why did I do that?
Jess made some mini-meatloafs today for our Sunday lunch. The last step is to broil them with the sauce, at a particular temperature. She pulled them out of the oven, just moments before I walked in.
For whatever reason, I was going to move the meat thermometer into the sink and touched the 500 degree piece of metal with my bare fingers.
Tonight I am nursing two burned fingers and my dignity...

embarassing
These Yankees of mine just don’t show up to play some games. 1 run? Against the last place AL West team even. You have to wonder, particularly if you are a Yankees fan, if the hiring of Joe Girardi was the right one. I tend to think so, but at the same time you high powered offense needs to produce more than one little run in these type games.

content change
Hi folks who frequent our blog or visitors who have no idea what is going on.
As you can see by going through our archive, our blog is and has become a hodgepodge of many different things. We’ve decided to break this down into several different blogs for your viewing pleasure. Without further delay…
http://jesa.tumblr.com will be a blog focused about Jessica’s love of baking

But I can’t get away from Rachie.
(Why?)
Because she’s so cute!

weird funk
Both Jess and I have been experiencing a weird funk these last few days. I’m sure it is all the physical and emotional turbulance we have been going through since middle of last week. I think it is all just catching up to us. What would be nice right about now would be a vacation, or just to get away.
A praise report would be a couple from church really stepped in the other night and...

more on Pop
this came as a comment from my brother on the Pop post. Thought I would share with everyone:
We were blessed to live with him for a few months leading up to this. He was awesome. He enjoyed us being there and made us feel that way. We felt really welcome there, and while Pop had his ups and downs health-wise, he always made us feel like he was happy we were there. Hugging Carrie. Holding...

Pop's passing
Just wanted to alert you that my granddad, Pop, took his last breaths this morning at or around 6:30am. He was resting, but still laboring to breathe up until a few short hours before, and then became peaceful and his breath was more and more shallow.
Yet we rejoice.

thoughts from a rough day
Today was a painful day. We still appreciate your prayers. Some thoughts from today…
1 John 2:15-17 “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world-the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions-is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world...

mighty mouse!
I placed an order this week for a mac mini for my uncle & aunt. They were in need of a new computer, and knowing that playing tech support for Microsoft Vista would be a pain, I talked them into going with Apple. The most they use a computer for would be email, surfing and occassionally printing something.
Today the package came in the mail, and opening the first container in the box...

Hop on Pop
[Jessica posted this in the comments of the Pop entry.]
The one I always think of as the quintessential Pop story is the one he would tell me over and over about how some cat was getting into the outside trash all the time and making a mess so he found a way to wire up some board with nails and electrical wire and put it on top of the trash can. So the next time the cat jumped on it it shocked it...

now he's a problem
I look at the “professional” news guys over at ESPN and laugh. Particularly your friendly neighborhood BoSox homer, JayJay Stark, and his comments about Manny found here.
Come on Stark, he’s just Manny being Manny…get over it.
our dilemma
My grandfather is ready to leave this earth. He told me so this morning. While he didn’t communicate it directly, his words were of the sort - “I don’t know why I am still here.” And just looking into his eyes I know that it pains him a great deal just to be in a bed, and not able to look after himself.
My grandfather was part of a local church body, and my grandmother...

Pop
These are the last days of my grandfather on this earth. He lived a full life, and the Lord blessed him with many talents that he used to glorify Him. I have many good memories of Pop over the years. Most of those come from when he would come over to our home to eat, he would sit and watch whatever was on the TV, while my mom and grandmother would pour over the last minute preparations for our...

– From James Grant at Between Two Worlds
I can honestly say that I don’t respond sometimes to worship - too distracted by my son (weak), and sometimes it feels a little too redundant (again weak).

Limiting Free speech? →
Actually I welcome this novel use of technology. Why are our public representatives so apprehensive of embracing this? Do they or do they not know who they serve? Some folks might tell you that they serve the lobby or in some cases each other. In some cases I tend to agree. It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the coming days (ed note: the house is on vacation for 5 weeks, so...
